A hidden gem of Los Angeles

Continental Kosher Bakery is a family owned neighborhood institution specializing in traditional, handcrafted, breads, pastries, cookies, and cakes. Every item is fresh-baked on-site in our half-century old, tile-lined, revolving-shelf oven, and is certified kosher and dairy free by the Rabbinical Council of Californian.

  • 1920, Phillip Levenson, opened the original bakery in Harlem, New York. using recipes he brought with him from his native Russia.
  • This family tradition continues today in North Hollywood, California, with his grandson, Eddy Polon, wife Emily, and crew of bakers, sales clerks, and schleppers.
  • In continuous operation at this location since 1962, Continental Kosher Bakery carries on the family’s tradition of creating delicious and satisfying products using century old recipes and techniques.

How it all started…

My Grandfather, Phillip Levenson, stepped on dry land again after the long Atlantic voyage. Fleeing the shtetl (small village) of Babroysk, Russia, he arrived with little to his name… Only a handful of recipes in a weathered journal. It was his most valued possession: a hand-written diary of the flavors and traditions of Eastern Europe’s Kosher delicacies.

By the 1920’s Phillip had scrimped and saved enough to open his own Kosher bakery in lower Harlem and served that bustling immigrant community happily for many years. Phillip’s daughter, Selma, married my father, Milton, and moved to Los Angeles in 1953 leaving baking behind. Time passed. Our family continued to work in the food industry. first in commercial egg production and latter in ingredient sales and warehousing. But the lure of those delicacies… The smell of fresh baked bread; the sweetness of fresh fruit fillings layered on a flakey crust… was part of our heritage: our D.N.A.. and the call to return to our family roots brought us back to the bakery.

Today, Emily and I, along with our children, Maya and Jordan, run Continental Kosher Bakery – one of the oldest Kosher certified bakeries in Los Angeles. Phillip’s recipes of three generations ago live again as part of our family’s legacy and commitment to making delicious breads, pastries, cookies, and decorated cakes for all occasions.
